Chuck's roommate, and presumably his best friend, although their relationship seems to be made up mostly of arguing and taking verbal jabs at one another. James doesn't trust Miriam and isn't at all hesitant to remind Chuck of this at almost every opportunity. Often holds himself up as an example that Chuck should aspire to emulate, especially in terms of his relationships with women (in spite of the fact that he doesn't seem to know any). James' most visible passion is for basketball; he watches it, plays it, and seemingly bases his opinion of John on the latter's skill at the game. Prior to being schooled by John in a one-on-one game, James seemed to hold John in the same kind of contempt he now reserves for Miriam. It should be said, however, that he seems to be grudgingly accepting her presence, if only for lacking any power to stop it.
